Ford Prefect

Noone knows what his original name is. Ford Prefect was named in an obscure Betelgeusian dialect spoken by the Praxibetels on Betelgeuse VII which were all (with the exception of Ford's father) wiped out by the "Great Hrung Disaster of Gal./Sid./Year 03758". (his father later died ashamed because his son could not pronnounce his original name)

At school he was called IX:
"a boy who is not able satisfactorily to explain what a Hrung is, nor why it should choose to collapse on Betelgeuse Seven".

He chose the name Ford Prefect being "nicely inconspicious" - he had skimped a bit on his preparatory research.

He had unfortunately arrived to the wrong idea that Ford prefect was a usual name on earth!

How does he look like?
"striking but not conspiciously handsome".
Wiry hair brushed backwards from the temples
His skin "seemed to be pulled backwards from the nose".

Only known relative is Zaphod Beeblebrox. Zaphod says for Ford he is his semi-cousin "who shares three of the same mothers as me".
